प्राचीनकाल में अंतस् में विद्यमान शोधशक्ति को ही ज्यादा महत्व दिया जाता था। मध्यकाल में देस्कार्टीज आदि मनीषियों ने अंतर्ज्ञान के स्थान पर विचार और तर्क को प्रतिष्ठा देना शुरू किया। उसे आत्यांतिक महत्व देने का परिणाम यह हुआ कि विचार और तर्क ही अंतिम कसौटी रह गए। उनमें शुष्कता आ गई। विचार और तर्क को कसौटी बनाया गया, तो कुछ मनीषियों ने सवाल उठाया कि यह निर्धारण भी भाव के स्तर पर ही आया है। अगर निर्धारण भाव या अंतर्ज्ञान से आया है, तो कसौटी तय होने से पहले ही निरस्त हो गई। विचार और तर्क के प्रबल आग्रह वाले उस युग में यह सवाल एक तरह कर दिया गया।
